Game Story:
Two Berkshire County golf events produced a pair of familiar winners this weekend.
Waubeeka’s Chris Baran, a semi-finalist in the North Adams Invitational Singles Match Play last year, avenged that loss to defending champion Jason Whitmire with a 20-hole victory on Sunday morning. He then hung on to beat North Adams member Kevin Lamb, 1-up, in the final. Baran, a nine-time North Adams club champion, has now won the North Adams Match Play two of the last three years. He earned 190 points and moved to 3rd in the Men’s Player of the Year standings, presented by the Scarafoni Financial Group.
At the Berkshire Hills Invitational Singles, Bryan Bigley, of Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland, NY, followed up his brother Robbie’s title in 2006 with a one-stroke victory over Country Club of Pittsfield member Matt Scarafoni and Taconic’s Ed Budz.
Bigley began the day one stroke behind Budz, but rallied with birdies on 10, 14 and 15 to finish 5-under after shooting 69. He was the only player in the field to shoot a pair of sub-70 scores.
Scarafoni also trailed Budz by one thru 36 holes. He opened his round with birdies on Nos. 3 and 5, but three-putted No. 9 for bogey, missed a five-foot birdie on the short par-5 10th hole and bogeyed 13 for the third consecutive day.
“Close, but no cigar,” said Scarafoni, who earned 132.5 points and shares 4th place in the Men’s Player of the Year standings with Budz. “What are you going to do? I shot 2-under in the last group and lost. But [Bigley] played good.”
Current point leader Donnie Troy finished solo 4th with rounds of 67-75-72. He earned 95 points and leads Skyline’s Mike Slosek by 35 points.
