Lee—Doug Reed may not have won today ’s Senior Open at Greenock, but he did extend his lead in the Scarafoni Financial Senior Player of the Year standings.
The Worthington member and reigning Senior POY tied for 5th after carding a 5-over 77 to earn 42.5 points and boost his total to 327.5. Stockbridge’s Bob Driscoll, who trailed Reed by only 20 points entering the event, shot a 12-over 82 and didn’t earn any points. Morawiec’s still 2nd in the standings, but he now trails Reed by 62.5 points.
Stockbridge’s Bob Driscoll shot 72 and won by two shots. He earned 125 points. Greenock’s Dan McCusker and Taconic’s Ray Lamoureux shot 74 and tied for 2nd. North Adams members Ron Bernardi (66) Ed Noel (64) won the net division in the 50-59 and 60-69 age divisions.
One year ago, Reed had already clinched POY honors. Now, he will have to wait and see how a handful of local players fare in the upcoming New England Senior Amateur and Massachusetts Senior Amateur. Stockbridge’s Jim Finnerty, who trails Reed by 195 points, has the best chance. Of the three players that have qualified to play in both events, he is the only one with any points.
