Concord—What a difference a year makes.

During the 2006 Massachusetts Amateur, Pittsfield’s Donnie Troy survived an 8-for-5 playoff into match play en route to reaching the quarterfinals.

This year, he didn’t survive the 36-hole cut.

Following a first round 75 on Monday, Troy went out in 44 on his front nine yesterday and shot 83. His 18-over 158 total left him tied for 106th, ten shots shy of getting into a playoff for the final qualifying spot.

Skyline’s Milton Torres fared slightly better, but a pair of 75s still left him two shots shy. The main culprit in his demise: A balky putter. He followed a 37-putt effort on Monday with 36 more on yesterday, including a trio of three-putts.

“If those were two-putts, I would have got in,” said Torres, who has never advanced to match play in five appearances. “But there’s no excuse. And I missed a two-footer. That’s how bad it was.”

Skyline’s Mike Slosek, the current Men’s player of the year point leader, shot 80-79 and finished one shot behind Troy.
