Agawam—Remember that "highly unlikely" scenario Andy Congdon needed in order to catch Mike Slosek in the Men's Player of the Year standings?
It became a little less unlikely on Wednesday
One day after Slosek qualified for the Mass. Mid-Amateur to earn 50 points and move ahead of two-time POY Donnie Troy for tops in the standings, Congdon shot 69 in Wednesday's Mass. Mid-Am qualifier at Crestview (the low round at that site by four shots) to earn medalist honors and, more importantly, 65 points. Combined with the 65 points he earned for winning his 19th Wyantenuck Men's Club Championship last weekend, Congdon now trails Slosek by 43.1 points.
Slosek won't be able to compete in the Mass. Mid-Am because it conflicts with the U.S. Mid-Am, which he qualified for on Aug. 27th. Assuming Slosek doesn't earn points by advancing to match play in the U.S. Mid-Am, Congdon will have to finish solo 10th or better in the Mass. Mid-Am, scheduled for for Sept. 24-26 at Cohasset Golf Club, to overtake Slosek and win the player of the year outright.
Since the Men's Allied on Aug. 12, no one in Berkshire County has been hotter than Congdon. He finished 2nd to fellow Wyantenuck member Davis Mullany in the Allied at Waubeeka to earn 200 points, plus 10 for being on Wyantenuck's winning team. On Aug. 23rd, he shot 68 and won the Wyantenuck Classic Singles to earn 100 more points. During Labor Day weekend, he avenged his loss to Mullany and won Wyantenuck's men club championship to earn 65 points. Not a bad stretch for one of the few 50+ players in the area that can still compete with players more than half his age.
Congdon was one of five Berkshire players to qualify at Crestview. Berkshire Hills members Matt Ortega (73), recently crowned club champion Bob Linn (74), and '06 club champion John Dahrouge (78) all got in, as did Stockbridge's Randy Driscoll (76), who won his 3rd consecutive club championship last weekend. All four earned 50 points.
