Wakefield—Donnie Troy’s two-year reign as Berkshire County Men’s player of the year has come to an end.

And his good friend Mike Slosek is to blame.

Last week, the Skyline member qualified for the United State Mid-Amateur and moved within five points of Troy in the standings. Yesterday, he qualified for the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur and assured Troy would not receive a third consecutive player of the year trophy.

“It feels good,” said Slosek, who shot a 5-over 75 and earned 50 points to overtake Troy. “I had my back up against the wall. It made me more determined and focused.”

Slosek trailed Troy by roughly 84 points in the standings two weeks ago, when Troy went back to Eckerd (Fla.) College for his senior season.

“I’m happy for him,” Troy said when he heard the news. “I know he really wanted it.”

Troy’s reign as POY has officially ended, but Slosek’s hasn’t officially begun either. Wyantenuck’s Andy Congdon, who recently won his 19th men’s club championship, trails Slosek by roughly 110 points and still has a chance to catch him. But it’s complicated: he must qualify for the Mass. Mid-Amateur, finish in the top ten and hope that Slosek doesn’t earn points in the U.S. Mid-Amateur in September.

Those scenarios aside, Slosek became the only men’s player in the Berkshires to qualify for this year’s Mass. Amateur, Open, Mid-Amateur and Public Links.

“I needed to see some steps in my game” Slosek said, when asked about the growth of his game this year. “It’s been slow but it’s been steady. I like to keep my scores below 75 and I’ve done that. I have visions of 67 and 68, and that’s just a few steps away. I’m not satisfied with where I am.”

The only bad news for Slosek is that he cannot compete in the Mass. Mid-Am, scheduled for September 24-26, because it conflicts with the U.S. Mid-Am.

“I just get to make up for it at the U.S. Mid-Am,” he said with a smile.
