Bellingham—The good news for Skyline's Mike Slosek (76-73) is that he tied for 10th in the Massachusetts Public Links on Wednesday, his third consecutive top 10 finish in that event.

The bad news is that he tied for 10th in the Massachusetts Public Links with four other players, which reduced the points he earned toward the Berkshire County Men's Player of the Year to a measly nine.

It all means that although he jumped over Chris Baran and into 2nd, he still trails two-time POY Donnie Troy by more than 140 points in the standings, with only the Wyantenuck Classic Singles (Aug. 23), U.S. Mid-Am qualifier and Mass. Mid-Am qualifier remaining on the Men's schedule. (Troy returns to Eckerd College for his senior season in two weeks and will likely not compete again this year.) Skyline's Milton Torres shot 74 in round one but struggled to 83 in the final round and tied for 46th.

Notes:

Slosek made a bogey on the opening hole in the final round, but refused to fold.

“This is not what's going on,” he said. “You've worked to hard.” He responded with birdies on Nos. 8 & 9.

He attempted a rally on the back nine, but missed putts from 12, five and ten feet on the final three holes.

“If you hit it to three-feet or to 20-feet, it doesn't matter if you don't make it,” Slosek said.

  • Slosek tied for 8th in 2005 and was 8th last year.
  • Torres has qualified for this event six consecutive years.
