Westfield—Depending on where you play in Berkshire County, par for the course can be 70, 71 or 72.
Since 2002, par for the course to Milton Torres has meant qualifying for the Massachusetts Public Links championship.
This year was no different.
“Another day at the office,” joked Torres, who shot a 3-over 74 at Tekoa Country Club yesterday to earn a spot in the Massachusetts Public Links Championship for the 6th consecutive year.
Torres earned 50 points and is 3rd in the Men’s Player of the Year standings, presented by the Scarafoni Financial Group.
Fellow Skyline member Mike Slosek rebounded from a front nine 41 to shoot 76. He then survived a 3-for-1 playoff with a par on the 1st playoff hole.
“I expected to make it,” said Slosek, who finished 8th in this event in 2005 and 2006. He also earned 50 points and trails two-time POY and current point leader Donnie Troy by 2.5 points. Wahconah’s Brandon Sullivan shot 77.
Slosek and Torres are the only Berkshire County players to qualify for the Mass. Amateur, Open and Public Links Championships this year.
New England Country Club in Bellingham, Mass. will host the Massachusetts Public Links Championship August 14-15.
Also yesterday, Berkshire Hills junior members Tanner Jones and John Laviolette shot 83 and won the 16-older division of the Berkshire County Junior Golf Series at Worthington Golf Club. Worthington’s Cameron Duchin shot 75 to win the 14-15 division. Wahconah’s Shaun Folan shot 83 and won the 13-under division.
