Florence, S.C.—Go ahead.
Take away Matt Donovan’s first career win on the North American Pro Golf Tour earlier this summer. And take away the two-runner up finishes that netted him $18,000. You can even take away the 9-under par 62 that he shot at the C.C. of Pittsfield to break the course record earlier this month.
He’d give it all up for one round good enough to get him into the second stage of the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament.
Donovan fired his second consecutive 1-under par 69 at Florence Country Club yesterday. But he gained only four places on the leaderboard and still remains six shots back of the final qualifying spot.
He began his round on the back nine. After a bogey on No. 11, he birdied Nos. 12, 16 and 18 to make the turn in 2-under. He added a birdie on the par-five 5th hole, where he made double on Tuesday, to reach 3-under for the day and 1-over for the tournament. But he bogeyed the next two holes to fall from a tie for 41st to a tie for 55th.
He was unavailable for comment after his round.
It is worth mentioning that Donovan does have some history of going extremely low in final rounds. Three years ago, he shot a final round 6-under 63 to overtake PGA TOUR star Sean O’Hair and Rick Karbowski, a partial member of the Champions Tour, to win the 2004 Greater Bangor Open, for his first career win.
Donovan tees off the 10th tee at 9:20 Friday morning. Visit PGATOUR.com for scoring.
