Hudson, Mass.—Golf tournaments hold qualifiers for a reason: to qualify.
This year, few—if any—golfers have done that better than Skyline’s Mike Slosek, who earlier this summer advanced through qualifiers for the Mass. Amateur, Mass. Open and Mass. Public Links.
Slosek made it four-for-four at Charter Oak Country Club, where he qualified for the United States Golf Associations final event of 2007: The United States Mid-Amateur.
The former Hoosac Valley High School standout shot an even par 71 to earn one of four berths into next month’s event at Bandon Dune in Bandon, Oregon.
“It feels awesome that I get to play against the best players in the world,” said Slosek, the first Berkshire golfers to qualify since Ed Budz in 2005.
One-under through 14 holes, he three-putted Nos. 15 and 16 from 20-feet for bogey.
“I was getting nervous because it’s a really hard course and I was under par,” he said.
Although he didn’t know it at the time, he arrived on the tee of the par 5 18th hole needing birdie to avoid a playoff for the final spot.
“I was like, ‘come on, let’s go,’” Slosek recalled.
He carried his tee shot 280 yards over a fairway bunker, which left him with 200 yards to the green. He hit 5-iron onto the green and then two-putted for a closing birdie.
Slosek earned 80 Men’s Player of the Year points for qualifying. He now trails current point leader Donnie Troy by 4.4 points in the standings. Slosek’s next chance to overtake Troy will come in Massachusetts Mid-Amateur qualifying next week.
