Western Mass. Open

Crumpin-Fox Club

May 21-22

Bernardston, Mass—Hours after shooting a second round 3-over 75 to finish 5th in the Western Mass. Open, Pittsfield’s Matt Donovan summed up Crumpin-Fox Club quite succinctly.

“Crumpin-Fox is freaking hard,” said Donovan, whose 5-over 149 total earned him $500.

Fresh off another winter caddying at Seminole Golf Club in south Florida, Donovan’s showing at Crumpin-Fox comes on the heels of a failed attempt at US Open local qualifying in Albany one week earlier.

After such a long hiatus, any rust on his game was to be expected, but not overwhelming.

“I didnt feel too bad,” he said. “…couple bad clubs really. I felt like it should have been better. But my course management’s a whole lot better than it was.”

On No. 4, a downhill par-3, Donovan’s tee shot sailed the green and led to double.

“I just hit the wrong club over the green,” he said. “You can't do that.”

Skyline’s Mike Slosek tied for 29th with rounds of 82-79. Like Donovan, Slosek found the going tough and admitted to finding himself “in some pretty precarious spots.”

Slosek had planned on competing in this event since the winter as a barometer to compare his game against other area professionals.

Former Connecticut amateur standout Jerry Courville won with rounds of 75-69 and earned $3,000.
