Great Barrington—You’ll have to excuse Andy Congdon for not putting yesterday’s Wyantenuck Classic at the top of his priority list.
Minutes after carding a 2-under 68 for a two shot victory and his third Wyantenuck Classic title, Congdon bolted for his car instead of the leader board.
“I’m on my way home to see my beautiful wife and celebrate our 32nd anniversary,” he said. “And later on, my son will be calling from South Korea.”
Andy’s wife, Cheryl, is usually his biggest cheerleader in events around the Berkshires. His son, Brian, graduated from the Air Force Academy as one of the top pilots in his class and is now overseas as an F-16 fighter pilot in the United States Air Force.
“He’s everything I wish I was,” the proud father said. “It was a special evening. To have the opportunity to talk to [my son], and to play well capped it all off. I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”
His win, worth 100 Men’s player of the year points, helps sweeten a somewhat sour summer in which he failed to qualify for the Mass. Amateur or Open and fell short of his own expectations in the Allied Individual, Berkshire Hills Singles and Stockbridge Classic.
“The short game’s there,” Congdon admitted. “I made some putts that I haven’t made in years.”
Wyantenuck’s Ed Schopp shot 70 and finished 2nd. Skyline’s Mike Slosek shot a 1-over 71 and tied for 3rd with recent Allied Individual champion Davis Mullany. Slosek earned 60 Men’s player of the year points and now stands roughly 84 points behind leader and two-time defending Men’s player of the year Donnie Troy, who recently departed for his senior year at Eckerd (Fla.) College.
“My back’s up against the wall,” Slosek said. “But it’s how you finish the year, not how you start it.” Slosek will compete in a U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier next Monday and a Mass. Mid-Am qualifier next month in the hopes of catching Troy.
Wyantenuck’s Bob Brunetti shot 74 and shared top billing in the senior division with Torrington’s Dick Weigold.
