Berkshire Hills Country Club Invitational Singles Round 3
July 30—Andy Congdon made a valiant effort, but the Berkshire Hills Invitational Singles trophy will reside outside of Berkshire County lines for the next year.
“I had a number in mind,” said Congdon, who trailed second round leader Robby Bigley, of Schenectady, NY, by five shots entering the final round. “But you need to get some breaks along the way. It would have been nice if a local guy could have won it, but I was being selfish and wanted to win it for myself.”
Congdon, a winner in 2004, began the final day tied for sixth and closed with a 3-under 69, one of just three sub-70 rounds shot during the tournament, to post 1-under 215. As it turned out, the number he had in mind—a 66—would have been good enough to for a one-stroke victory.
Instead, Bigley’s two bogey, two birdie final round left him two shots clear. He becomes the first non-Berkshire County winner since Jim Mueller, of Orchard Creek, held off Donnie Troy and John Dahrouge in 2003. Ed Budz surged past Troy on the final nine in 2005, and was unable to defend this year due to work commitments.
