Kathy Duguay: August 19th
Editor’s note: Duguay enters the Women’s Allied Individual (which she won in 2006) on Aug. 22 at Berkshire Hills in a deadlock with Diane Breen atop the Women’s Player of the Year standings. This year, they have partnered in seven events and won six, with their lone non-win coming in Stockbridge’s Sherwood Invitational, where they made double-bogey on No. 16 and lost by one. She penned a journal one week before the Allied in response to several questions.
The Allied: “The Allied Championship is always a difficult tournament for me. There aren't too many women's single events in the area, so we don't get a lot of opportunity for individual stroke play. It's a completely different ball game when you don't have a partner to rely on. I am looking forward to it and hope to play well.”
Diane Breen: “Diane is a good player and has the advantage of playing on her home course. I think she's going to do well. But keep in mind that the tournament is not a two horse race. There are several players in the final few groups who could play well too. I'll need to stay focused and hope my swing is working that day.”
Her Game: “Things have been a bit erratic for me on the golf course this year, particularly at my own course (glad we're not playing the Allied at Waubeeka this year). It's been a struggle to break 80 at home this year, so who knows what might happen at the tournament or at my club championship, which will begin next Friday.”
Fall Preparations: “At this time of the year, I'm also trying to get things ready for my fall classes, so I don't have as much time for golf, and I'm not as focused on golf as I am earlier in the year. (Note: Duguay is an English Professor at a local university in Pennsylvania.) I always start looking forward to getting back in the classroom about this time. We'll see how things go on Wednesday. In one 18-hole round, anything can happen.”
