July 13—One advanced. One did not.

Just like that,
Berkshire County’s representation in this year’s Massachusetts amateur dwindled to one.

After surviving an 8-for-5 playoff earlier in the morning to earn a berth into match play, Country Club of Pittsfield member Donnie Troy, one of five Berkshire County players in this year’s event, upset third seed John Hadges 2 & 1 to advance to the round of 16.

“It was crazy,” said
Troy, who chipped in for par on no. 17 and prevailed when Hadges missed a 10-foot birdie putt.

Forest Park member Mike Slosek, seeded 19th, fell four down after four holes to Chad Keohane and ran out of holes before succumbing, 2 & 1.

“It was in the blink of an eye,” said Slosek, the current Men’s POY points leader, of his early deficit. “It was so unbelievable.” Two-over through four holes, he won the 6th, 8th and 10th holes to get within two. His bid to face
Troy in the round of 16 fell short on the 17th hole, after he bogeyed and Keohane birdied to close out the match.

Troy, however, personified the description of match play: survive and advance. He birdied his final two holes of stroke play qualifying on Tuesday. In the playoff to advance to match play, Troy raced his birdie putt 10-feet by on the first playoff hole. A miss would have eliminated Troy. But he sank the putt and made a routine par on the next hole, no. 17, to join Slosek in the bottom right quarter of the match play bracket.

After a string of three consecutive bogeys left him two down to
Troy through nine holes, Hadges stuffed his approach on no. 11 to five-feet. Troy responded, hitting his second shot to three-feet. But Hadges missed his putt and lost the hole.

“I think that kind of got in his head,”
Troy admitted. “I don’t think he expected a match from me.” Troy birdied no. 14 to move 3 up, but three-putted no. 16 before closing out the match with his heroics on the 17th green. “I didn’t even react,” he said later. “I expected him to make it. He didn’t make anything all day.”

Troy will now face Keohane in the round of 16 at 7:45 on Thursday morning. Two-time defending champion Frank Vana, Jr. also advanced with a 3 & 2 victory over 2001 champion Brendan Hester.
