Mullany Advances to U.S. Junior Amateur Devens—Monument Mountain Junior Davis Mullany punched his ticket into one of the nation’s most prestigious junior events at Red Tail Golf Club on Tuesday.
Mullany, second in last year’s Massachusetts Junior Amateur, carded rounds of 75-73 to earn one of the three spots into the U.S. Junior Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe, California the week of July 17.
“I was like, ‘Sweet, California here I come,” said Mullany, the only player from Massachusetts to qualify. “I wasn’t playing too well coming into it. I wasn’t expecting to get through. But I thought I’d have a chance.”
Tied for third after a 75 in the morning round, Mullany birdied nos. 12 and 13 and doubled the 16th before parring his final two holes for a 1-over 73 in the afternoon.
“It’s pretty big,” he said. “It’s exciting to play against the best players in the country. I’m going to practice and hope to get to match play.”
“My mom was really excited and so was my sister, but my dad has to book everything so he was like, ‘Oh, God.’”
The U.S. Junior Amateur field will include 156 players, including defending champion Kevin Tway, son of PGA TOUR member Bob Tway, who prevailed at Longmeadow Country Club last year. The top 64 players from 36-hole stroke play qualifying advance to match play. Davis Mullany: Player Spotlight
