August 11—Unfortunately for Mike Slosek, history repeated itself.
Exactly one month after following up a first round 70 with a 75 on day two of the Mass. Amateur, Slosek posted those same numbers during the Western Mass. Amateur at Elmcrest Country Club.
“Another struggle on the back nine, said Slosek, who shot 40 on his inward nine holes and tied for 12th. “My head was everywhere but on a golf shot.”
Slosek made the turn in even par 35, but missed a four-foot putt par on no. 11 and then made a double on no. 13.
“Then from there I was a head case coming in,” he said. “I couldn’t calm down. I kind of rushed. I’m very disappointed.”
Slosek’s 5-over 145 total left him nine shots behind Winthrop standout Pete Alminas, whose brother, Steve, defeated Donnie Troy in a playoff at this event last year.
Troy, the men’s player of the year leader, rebounded with a 1-under 69 in the second round despite a double bogey on no. 5, a reachable par 5. His 2-over 142 total, worth 50 POY points, placed 5th. Troy, who holds a 135 point lead over Andy Congdon, has accumulated all of his points outside of Berkshire County, most notably during a successful attempt at U.S. Amateur qualifying last week.
Sunday’s 36-hole Men’s Allied at Egremont will likely decide this year’s player of the year, with the winner receiving 300 points.
